I want to talk
about illegal immigration in terms that I understand well:
fast food. Let's say -- hypothetically, of course -- that
I'm not in great shape. Maybe my Doctor even once said,
"That can't be right!" when he first saw my cholesterol
numbers. Anyway, the point is that I've been ordered to
never again order any McDonald's "Extra Value meals."
Now, let's say the next day I'm driving home, I make a wrong
turn, and all of a sudden I find myself sitting in the
McDonald's drive through. I realize that I'm not allowed to
order the Extra Value meal, so instead I just order a
delicious double cheeseburger. Then, I drive around again
and separately order a large fry, and then I go inside and
order a Coke. Technically I've followed my doctor's orders,
right?
Of course not, but the Real Story is that that's exactly the
same logic that some of our politicians are using on the
illegal immigration debate. After the country overwhelming
rejected the so-called "comprehensive plan" (think Extra
Value combo meal) some Democrats have now resorted to simply
ordering each of the items individually and hoping that no
one will notice.
The latest attempt is something called the "Dream Act." It
would essentially give amnesty, and create a path to
citizenship (sound familiar), for illegal aliens who came
here prior to turning 16 years old. It doesn't matter how
old they are now, just that they initially came here before
they were 16.
If the Dream Act passes, it could mean citizenship for at
least a million illegals already here, and possibly their
families as well. While that may sound reasonable to some
people, it's exactly what the amnesty advocates want. They
get you to give in on a few million here, and then a few
million from some other act, and pretty soon, before you
know it, you've eaten the whole damn Value Meal without even
knowing it.
