The one thing I
tried really hard to avoid during my summer vacation was
thinking about how many different ways terrorists can kill
us. You know, beach, sun, violent death, they just doesn't
go together. Fortunately, the NYPD was thinking about it and
today they've issued a new report with what I think is a
pretty startling conclusion: the biggest threat to our
country isn't from another 9/11 style al Qaeda attack.
According to New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly that was
"an anomaly." No, the Real Story is that the biggest threat
we face is from "unremarkable" Muslims who become
radicalized while living right here in the United States.
Officials claim that there are over two dozen "clusters" of
young Muslims in the Northeast alone who are potentially on
a path to radicalization and the report itself identifies
places like mosques, prisons, and cafes that are,
"radicalization incubators."
Now, we've known for a while that certain countries in
Europe (England and France come to mind) are in deep, deep
trouble from homegrown extremists, but this report is
remarkable because it's really one of the first times that
people with access to this type of information are ringing
the alarm bells here as well.
Surprisingly, these findings aren't sitting too well with
many Muslim organizations. The leader of one group called it
"unfortunate stereotyping" -- but to me the only unfortunate
thing is that political correctness has forced us to go this
long without being honest about the real threats we face.
Think about it, none of the attempted attacks in England
over the last few years -- everything from the subway
bombings, to the liquid explosives on airplanes, to the
foiled attack at the nightclubs -- have been planned by
terrorists in an Afghanistan cave, they've been planned by
extremists living right there in the U.K. Given the Fort Dix
and JFK plots, there is absolutely no reason to think that
that same hatred isn't brewing here as well, let's just hope
that reports like today's mean that, unlike the British,
we're finally brave enough to face it head-on.
