By
now you've probably heard of "The Fairness Doctrine," the
old FCC rule that required radio broadcasters to provide
equal time to both sides of political issues. It was
abolished back in 1987 when America realized that, unlike,
oh say, 1949, broadcast radio wasn't the primary way people
got their news anymore. Since then, Congress has tried and
failed twice to bring the Doctrine back...but now some top
Democrats are hoping the third time's the charm. Here's
what Senator Diane Feinstein said about it on Fox News
Sunday:
" Well, in my view, talk radio tends to be one-sided. It
also tends to be dwelling in hyperbole. It's explosive. It
pushes people to, I think, extreme views without a lot of
information."
We can't stand for this! Rise up everyone, it's time to
storm the castle! I mean come on, if the American people
are just zombies who go around doing whatever talk radio
hosts say then why is Diane Feinsteine's party in control of
Congress right now?
The Real Story is that there is nothing "fair" about the
Fairness Doctrine, unless you believe that our little free
market experiment has failed. Sure, there may not be "equal
time" when you listen to Rush or Sean Hannity or me....but
why is radio looked at in a vacuum? If you want the other
side, watch Keith Doberman, go take classes at any
University, or go read the New York Times or any one of
10,000 left-wing blogs. Democrats are right...the media
isn't balanced; the liberal point of view is far more
prevalent.
These people say they're targeting talk radio because the
frequencies are owned by the public, but please...so are the
broadcast TV networks and I didn't see anyone arguing that
Rosie O'Donnell should be balanced out by Ann Coulter.
Besides, if they're owned by the public, then the public
should decide what they want to hear...and their votes are
already in; Air America tried and failed.
The real reason they're coming after talk radio is because
our listeners get involved. They don't just listen to the
news; they act on it. Newsflash Washington: the people
calling your switchboards who you dismiss as zombies aren't
just talk radio listeners, they're Americans and their your
constituents. Maybe instead of trying to find a way to stop
them; you should pick up the phone and start listening to
them. |
