A lot of people
like to say that I'm a global-warming denier, but nothing
could be further from the truth. In fact...here you go
America, TiVo this and play it back to all your
environmentalist friends who hate me: the earth is getting
warmer.
But that's really not the question. The Real Story is that
virtually no-one is debating the earth's temperature, we all
know the earth has a fever, we're just questioning what to
do about it.
I want to share with you something I like to call the "Logic
Tree" and it encompasses all of the decisions you need to
make before you start spending money to "fix" global
warming.
First....Is the Earth still warming? I already said "yes,"
so we move on.
Are we sure who or what is responsible for that warming?
That's where I stop because I think the jury is still out,
but let's say, for the sake of argument, that we are sure.
Now you've got to figure out if throwing money at the
problem can solve it. You know, a lot of supposedly very
smart scientists say it's already too late. But again, for
argument's sake, let's say "yes" we can still stop it.
Alright, then the question becomes whether this the best use
of those funds? In other words, can the money save more
lives if we spent it on other things -- like, oh, I don't
know -- eradicating malaria, tuberculosis, or AIDS? Again
let's make the leap and say that global warming is the best
use.
Now we have to decide exactly where we spend that money?
There are a lot of ideas out there, so which ones do we
actually fund? ((F/S 6))And finally, we have to make sure
these "solutions" won't unintentionally create other
problems. If all of that is true, then go ahead and spend
the money.
I believe we are a looooong way from that last step, but
lots of other people are apparently already there, ready to
spend your money on unproven solutions.
For example, the New York Times ran an article this morning
about a new commercial venture to combat global warming by
dumping iron into the ocean with the hopes of growing
plankton. They write, "But even though many questions
remain unanswered...the ship plans to dissolve tons of
iron...over a 2.47 million acre area (of the ocean)."
I have a better idea: HOW ABOUT WE ANSWER THOSE QUESTIONS
BEFORE WE DUMP IRON INTO THE WATER?
It's the same thing with these crappy fluorescent light
bulbs that environmentalists are trying to get the entire
world to switch to. I'm glad they last longer, but what
about the fact that the mercury from those bulbs vaporizes
and is absorbed into plants, animals and soil when they're
thrown away? As soon as we all switch, mark my words: the
environmental groups will be screaming about how we're
poisoning the environment with mercury. Think I'm kidding?
It's already happening in Canada!
The only thing worse than ignoring a problem is creating
more of them when you try to solve it. But with global
warming, that's exactly what we're doing and no one seems to
care. |
