The Real Story: Limitations on Molestation
Updated
April 9, 2007

A 75 year old child psychiatrist in California was arrested last week on charges that he molested three patients who were ages 9, 11 and 12 at the time.  It's an absolutely disgusting case, but the worst part is that there are likely lots of other victims who will never get the justice they deserve.

The Real Story is that this monster -- and let me give you his name in case there are still victims out there, Doctor William Ayres -- has allegedly been molesting kids under his care for so long that the statute of limitations has run out for many of them.

Under a California law that went into effect in January 2006, child victims can pursue criminal charges only up until their 28th birthday.  Before that law, they only had 10 years from the day of the molestation.

But, either way, why is there a statue of limitations at all???  I've been saying for a while that we are separating ourselves in this country.  But that separation goes deeper than the elephant and the donkey...it's a disconnection from our own laws.  We say we care about children, but then we go and create arbitrary statutes of limitations for a crime that changes their lives forever.

Are you telling me that these monsters aren't going to molest again?  Are you telling me that the pain of child rape ends when they're 28?  If you believe that, I want you to send me a letter because I guarantee that it'll be written with something like pig's urine or crayons.  Honestly, the number of non-insane people who will send in letters will be zero.  In fact, I'll bet I get more coherent, more well-reasoned letters from people who believe this guy should be castrated with a pickle fork than I do from the apologists.

When a child is molested, a part of them dies.  To me, that means the statute of limitations for child molestation should never die.
