Welcome
to day seven of the Iran hostage crisis -- yea, that's right
I said it: hostage crisis. these guys aren't just "detained
sailors" like most of the media would have you believe;
they're hostages.
Earlier today, the Iranian government once again showed us
what liars they are by reneging on their promise to release
the female British sailor. That lead the U.K. to appeal
to--where else--the U.N. for a declaration condemning them.
I'm sure that'll be coming any second now.
Iran then responded by announcing that Britain has quote,
"miscalculated on this issue" and saying this case may now
face a, quote "legal path." Translation: we're gonna have a
good old fashioned made-for-tv espionage trial. But with all
this talk about what the U.S., U.N., or U.K. will do, we're
all forgetting about two other little letters that seem to
be missing from the discussion: E.U.
The Real Story is that the European Union should absolutely
be ashamed of themselves. Where's Spain speaking out on
this? Where's Italy or Germany? And, dare I ask, why don't
I see Jacque Chirac and the Frenchy French out there
pounding their fists on the table and telling the world how
unacceptable this is?
"Oh, but Glenn -- the EU president did issue a statement
condemning this on behalf of the whole Union!" Uh-uh --
well imagine if Canada was invaded and the U.S. decided to
stay quiet because NATO was speaking for us; that'd make
quite a strong statement about our outrage and support for
Canada, wouldn't it?
So why are all those European countries so quiet when one of
their own is in trouble? Is it because some of them have
large Muslim populations that they'd rather not incite?
Maybe. But more likely this is about what it's always
about: money. The E.U. is responsible for 40% of Iran's
imports. That's a lot of cash that to be lost if they'd
actually man-up and stop exporting to the madmen in Iran. I
guess President Bush's assessment that "money trumps peace"
has proven true once again.
And then, of course, we have our good friends in the Middle
East. Unlike the E.U., they have been extremely outspoken
the last few days. Here's what King Abdullah from our great
ally, Saudi Arabia had to say: "The spilling of blood
between brothers in Iraq and the illegitimate foreign
occupation and sectarianism threatens a civil war."
I'm sorry, did he say "illegitimate foreign occupation?"
Yea, yea, he did. While Iran was busy parading British
hostages out for the cameras, Saudi Arabia was blasting us
for the war in Iraq. Glad to see you guys have your
priorities in order.
All of this points to one indisputable fact: the U.S. and
the U.K. are pretty much in this fight alone. Political
correctness and a fear of lost profits have made almost
everyone else afraid to take a stand in the face of a clear
and present danger.
